Statement
I have always been an artist, I just spent the last 30 years doing other things.
Making mixed-media abstract art re-connects me to my inner self. Pushing paint around a canvas through experimentation allows me to experience and draw on my memories, thoughts and feelings without judgement. These internal experiences are expressed through shapes, colours and exploratory mark making, and allow me to be free from any perceived constraints. In this process, I rediscover parts of myself that may have been reshaped by life’s roles and experiences, yet continue to seek authenticity and expression.
I start each piece without any preordained notions or restrictions. My inspiration comes as I physically paint, and is drawn from the world around me: the still forest, the vast ocean, the gritty alleyways of my city and the diverse landscapes from my travels around the world.
At some point in the making of each piece, a different part of my brain kicks in and I make decisions using a critical eye, taking into consideration how the elements on the canvas relate to one another. My process is very much one of call and response, creation and destruction, pushing the differences and using my own life experiences to enhance the work and bring a sense of history and connectedness within the layers. Big gestural marks next to tiny, controlled lines create tension.
In the end, I have a snapshot of my evolving identity: I have a work that expresses who I was and how I felt in those particular moments in time.
